This can help the student understand that grieving can be a complex process, and that it is difficult to define as a process. This may be especially helpful in terms of students' personal belief systems, which may have a strong influence on their response to grief.Freuds was a neurosurgeon and a psychiatrist who wrote several books on treating grief in patients. In his book, The Nature of Grief, he argued that a person's emotions and thinking patterns affected how they dealt with things in their lives. The basis of his theory was that the processing in the brain changes when a person loses something, and that these processes are affected by what a person has been through.Freuds published several scientific papers and made many references to the study of memory and grief in his research. Many of these papers can be found online and have been edited to fit the sample essay on Freud's theory of grief.Freuds described four levels of grief. His descriptions follow a standard nine-level model. Levels one through four refer to the immediate experience of a loss, whereas levels five through nine refer to experiences that include a sense of loss that is over a longer period of time. Freuds is known to have included levels seven and eight in his model.Level one refers to feelings of discomfort and anger that occur when a person thinks about the deceased. The person may also experience some anxiety.Level two describes feelings of nostalgia, which can be accompanied by memories of the deceased and feelings of wanting to connect with the deceased. There may also be feelings of loneliness or alienation. A person who has experienced this level has a sense of connection to the deceased.Level three is characterized by a sense of emptiness and incompleteness. There may also be feelings of being separated from the loved one .Level four describes feelings of depression and hopelessness. It is characterized by a loss of interest in activities that were formerly enjoyable. This level is usually not treated by antidepressants.
